A Brief History of the Monongahela Branch

1864 - The Monongahela Branch actually had its beginning when a schoolhouse was rented in the village of nearby Mingo in which to preach the Gospel.

1870 – The Mingo-Monongahela City Branch donated a large sum of money for an Elder to visit all the branches for one year

1875 – A lot of its members moved to St John Kansas

1897 – Brothers Thomas Spence, Alexander Cherry, John Ashton, and William Cadman were very instrumental in the Gospels growth

1927 - Members were meeting in the Odd Fellows Lodge Hall

1928 – The Quorum of Twelve Apostles proposed to build a suitable place in the East to hold conferences, and Monongahela was chosen as the site and the General Church Headquarters

1930 – The building was dedicated at sixth and Lincoln Street (today 525 Lincoln St)

1941 – It was necessary to apply for a new incorporation to cover the churches needs in a large territory both in the US and Canada as well as other countries in the Western Hemisphere, so an application was made in the court of Washington County PA and it was granted with the title “The Church Of Jesus Christ” with its headquarters at Monongahela, PA.

We thank God that our branch continues to grow and move forward actively pursuing the work among the Seed of Joseph, in urban communities, on reservations, and abroad. We have a proud heritage passed down by our Brothers and Sisters, not only in that work, but also with the start of the work in Africa. Brothers W.H. Cadman (President of the church at that time) and Apostle Joseph Bittinger first traveled there. The branch has also lead the way with the MBA, Sunday School, and Ladies Circle all playing a supportive role.
